Youth
Youth academy or scouting network, which training to pick and which position to play the youngsters in. Rules from the manual and measurements by glynzales.
Youth academy or scouting network?
- Since 2023 the scouting network uses the same pool as the academy: each player sits between the minimum and maximum potential. You no longer recruit blind, because you see a preview before choosing.
- A well-kept academy yields more (average TSI of promoted players about 710), but a neglected academy yields much less than a scouting network (155 vs 490).
- Since 2024 the candidates are shown all together (no longer one at a time) and several youngsters can be promoted per week, as soon as they are ready.
- Between the last match of a youth league and the first of the next there are at least 7 days: you cannot switch league to train more.
What each secondary training is worth
Percentage of a full primary skill training. "Double" = same primary and secondary (166.7% × 80%). Osmosis is what players out of position receive.
- Scoring and set pieces training also gives +22% to set pieces.
- With age about 0.275% per week of training is lost.
- With the same primary and secondary the coach does not reveal the maximum potential and you get no reveals on other skills. With different primary and secondary you do: for keepers the most effective combination is Goalkeeping + Individual.
Training combinations: who trains and how much
Pick the primary + secondary combination: the bars show the average training per match for each group of players, in % of a full training. Reference lineup with 11 starters.
Totals of different skills cannot be compared directly: for example 14% set pieces is worth little compared with 14% defending. "Mixed" = individual training spread over several skills. Measurements from 2020: friendlies are now worth 80% instead of 50%.
Individual training: what you get by position
Probability that individual training picks a skill (GK keeper, CD central defender, WB wing back, WG winger, IM inner midfielder, FW forward), by the position in which the youngster played most minutes. Each match trains only one skill, even if it is already at its maximum.
Example, central defender with Defending + Individual: 37% chance of 146% defending; 27% of 100% defending + 38% playmaking; 26% of 100% defending + 67% passing; 10% of 100% defending + 67% set pieces. If you only need defending, in 63% of cases the secondary is "wasted".
How much individual training gives, skill by skill
Amount of training when individual training picks that skill, in % of a full training (2020 estimates; for set pieces it is an assumption).
Adding up the "true" value of each skill, individual training yields surprisingly similar amounts in every position: about 12% of a full team training.
Which position to play the trainee in
Positions that receive full training without penalties, by primary skill (columns) and secondary (rows).
| Secondary ↓ | Defending | Playmaking | Winger | Passing | Scoring |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Same as primary | CD/WB | IM | WG | – | FW |
| Defending (def.+mid.) | CD/WB | IM | WG | IM/WG | – |
| Winger (wing.+att.) | – | – | WG | – | FW |
| Passing (def.+mid.) | CD/WB | – | – | IM/WG | – |
| Scoring and set pieces | CD/WB | IM | WG | – | FW |
| Individual | CD/WB | IM | WG | – | FW |
| Set pieces | CD/WB | IM | WG | IM/WG/FW | FW |
CD = central defender, WB = wing back, IM = inner midfielder, WG = winger, FW = forward. "–" = combination with no position valid for both. For goalkeeping: keeper with Goalkeeping + Individual.
Useful rules
- The training report arrives right after the end of the match.
- For individual training what counts is the position where the youngster played most minutes; the probabilities per position are fixed and depend on nothing else.
- Youth injuries are updated every day at around 03:00 (HT time).
- CHPP tools recommended by the manual: Hattrick Youthclub and Scoutrick (formerly Rate My Academy).
- Combine different primary and secondary training when you can: you train two skills and get more potential reveals.
